Julius II (della Rovere) became pope in 1503. Being the successor of one of the most infamous popes of the history, Alexander VI, Borgia, he decided not to live in his apartments, as given a sign that a page of the past got turned. The rooms above those apartments were to be redecorated. Two, among the foremost painters of those day, started working: Perugino and Luca Signorelli. They had proved their skills in the walls of the Sistine Chapel (1483-1485).
